Andy Parkin, artist and mountaineer
Andy Parkin's survival story is one of the greatest in modern mountaineering. He suffered an horrific climbing fall in the Alps back in ’84, doctors advised his family to hurry to his bedside to say their farewells. Andy not only lived but, despite permanent physical disabilities, went on to become one of Britain’s most accomplished alpinists as well as an mountain artist.
Andy now lives in Chamonix where he wanders up to the foot of glaciers collecting sculpture materials: tree roots, wire, copper from old mountain refuge roofs to produce his works. He recently lost his artist's workshop in Chamonix to a fire. An online community crowdfunding appeal has been set up, collecting just over 27,000 Euros so far.
This film by Blue Hippo Media and Weekday Productions won the Judges' Special Prize at the Kendal Mountain Festival in 2008 and later went on to win Best Film at ShAFF in March 2009.
