Inside the new Design Museum
The new Design Museum has opened in the Commonwealth Institute building in Holland Park after moving from its original home in Shad Thames. Designed by John Pawson, the new museum includes two major temporary gallery spaces, a free permanent collection display, a restaurant overlooking Holland Park and an auditorium. The grade II* listed modernist building triples the museum’s size to 10,000 square metres.
The Design Museum, which was founded in 1989 by Sir Terence Conran, has in the past put on shows by star names including Thomas Heatherwick, Dame Zaha Hadid, Paul Smith and Christian Louboutin, and is aiming to go from strength-to-strength in its shiny new surroundings. The doors opened to the public for the first time in late November and the initial programme for 2017 has now been announced.
